Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Programs
MSM has actively advocated tobacco prevention since 1997.
In 1997, MSM began its tobacco prevention campaign with a Youth Tobacco-Free
Outreach funded by the Washington
State Department of Health and the
Tobacco Free Coalition of Pierce County. Through this Outreach, MSM
collaborated with local Korean churches to provide 10 tobacco prevention/cessation
educational seminars and held a drawing/essay contest for youth between
the ages of 11 and 18. The seminars and drawing/essay contest were
led by 8 youth volunteers under the supervision of the program coordinator.
As a result of the earnest and diligent efforts of our 1997-1998 youth
advocates, MSM was recognized and presented with a Community Service
Appreciation award from the Tobacco Free Coalition of Pierce County
and the S.M.O.O.T.H. (Students Mobilizing Others Out of Tobacco Habits)
Coalition.
In 1999, MSM launched an EPA Environmental Justice Project to educate
Korean American youth and adults about the dangers of indoor pollution
such as second-hand smoke. MSM utilized local Korean newspapers, KOAM
TV, and Radio Hankook to distribute literature and information about
second-hand smoke and other indoor pollutants in the Korean language.
We also provided workshops for youth and adults to create awareness
and promote critical thinking on environmental justice problems.
In 2000, MSM, with funding by Tacoma-Pierce
County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control, reached an estimated 300 Korean
American youth through an anti-tobacco campaign in a two-month period.
MSM also generated and aired a tobacco prevention and cessation video
on KOAM TV for youth, parents, and families. The goal of the video
was to teach and promote the use of more efficacious coping skills
and to help increase the abilities of youth to make better-informed
decisions.
