The history of MSM DD program.
In 1990 Mandy Ma (Director of MSM) met a Korean man in his mid 20's.
Who is handicapped and was alone. He lived at home and had no friends.
She became his
friend. He did nothing, just stayed at home. Mandy Ma helped him focus
on what he could do. Korean culture sometimes shows shame to people
with
disabilities.
Because of his handicap, he was highly noticeable to many people.
As a result of this friendship, the the DD (Developmental Disabilities)
program at MSM officially started
in 1995. There
are about 60
people involved
in MSM's
DD
program
this
year (2003).
Within the Korean community, there is much shame and
negative stigmas attached to developmental disabilities. Hence, families
dealing with
developmental disabilities often try to hide the matter
and feel ashamed about the disability. Thus, MSM created the Developmental
Disability
Outreach Program to educate families and the community
about disability. We are dedicated to providing public and health
awareness, community
education on developmental disabilities (DD), guardian
information, case management and counseling, translation and interpretation
services,
and assistance with children and parent support groups
for the developmentally disabled and their families. MSM also provides
a supportive and educational
meeting every month for developmentally disabled persons
and their families. Through our disability program, we are able
to provide a
caring and supportive atmosphere for the developmentally
disabled and their families, as well as educating the public about
disability.
